The looming closure of CCL Industries Inc. is the spark that ignited Penetanguishene’s interest in a provincial fund intended to spur economic growth.

Communities in Transition (CiT) is a discretionary grant program that helps municipalities take advantage of strategic opportunities, or overcome challenges in their economy.

The money typically goes toward studies, planning, pilot implementation, sectoral development and the like. If successful in its grant application, Penetanguishene intends to use the funds to hire a community development manager on a one-year contract.
