The shortest day of the year approaches, but thousands of candles are shining bright at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons for First Light.

Now in its 20th year, First Light is a family-friendly event that people can enjoy at night. Last year, this Ontario Top 100 event attracted more than 15,000 people.

The recreated 17th century mission has surprises in every building — from storytelling and drumming in the longhouses to sugar cookies, quill writing and miniature horses in the mission buildings.

Corn husk doll making is back in the Brébeuf Centre, along with many local food vendors.
