Manufacturing Day kicks off a full month of activities to celebrate all Ontario-based manufacturers, from the small 3D print shop to the large automaker. This is also an opportunity for young people to learn about the high-value, high-tech, high-skilled and high-paying career opportunities manufacturing offers, especially as the province begins to make the next generation of vehicles.
The celebration will lead up to a virtual event on October 29, with virtual open-door plant tours, allowing young people and educators to learn about the sector’s successes and strengths from local manufacturers and suppliers, as well as an industry panel discussion
The government is encouraging young people to consider an exciting career in a sector that in 2020 accounted for 650,000 jobs and close to 12 per cent of the province’s Gross Domestic Product.
To promote manufacturing in Ontario, the government supported the CME’s launch of the Ontario Made program. This program makes it easier for shoppers to identify and purchase products made right here at home. As of August 2021, the program included over 2,400 registered manufacturers, more than 10,800 registered products and 400 registered retailers.
As we continue to adapt to the challenges posed by the global pandemic, as a government, one of our top priorities is ensuring that Ontario remains open for business. That means creating and protecting jobs, supporting businesses, and increasing investment and trade, so Ontario’s economy can grow and thrive.
That is why through lowering taxes, reducing electricity costs and cutting red tape, the Ontario government has reduced business costs in the province by nearly $7 billion annually.
With stable infrastructure, a well-trained workforce, tax credits and specialized manufacturing research and development, Ontario is enabling a vibrant and diverse manufacturing sector to thrive in the province. The sector has strengths in the automotive, food processing, life sciences, aerospace and chemicals sectors, among others.
